How Emla Skin Numbing Cream Works: Emla helps make your skin feel numb for a short time, blocking the pain signals from only the area of skin where the cream is applied. Emla is a topical anaesthetic cream that contains lidocaine (lignocaine) and prilocaine. It is applied directly to the skin to help lessen the pain experienced during common skin laser treatments such as the removal of unwanted hair.
