Information Emla is a topical anaesthetic that numbs the skin before certain procedures. Emla patches are convenient, ready to-use and easy to apply, making them ideal for use on children. Don't worry, adults that don't like needles can use Emla too! Emla patches are for use prior to vaccinations, and also: • Needle insertions e.g. blood sampling • Superficial surgical procedures • Split skin grafting (transplantation of skin) Why use Emla patches? • Can help prevent pain from vaccinations or injections • Available without a prescription • Suitable for babies (excluding premature), kids and adults • Convenient, ready to use and easy to apply How Emla Skin Numbing Patches work: Emla helps make your skin feel numb for a short time, blocking the pain signals from only the area of skin where the patch is applied. Emla is an over-the-counter topical patch that contains lidocaine (lignocaine) and prilocaine. It is applied directly to the skin to help lessen the pain experienced during needle insertions (e.g. blood sampling, vaccinations and superficial surgical procedures). Emla patches need to be applied at least 1 hour before your procedure. • Make sure that the area of the skin to be anaesthetised is clean and dry • Take hold of the aluminium flap at the corner of the patch and bend it backwards • Next, take hold of the corner of the beige-coloured patch layer • Pull the two layers apart, separating the adhesive surface from the protective liner • Making sure you do not touch the white round pad which contains Emla • Apply patch to the intended area and press firmly around the edges • Time of application can be marked onto the corner of the patch taking care not to press the centre of the dressing.
